Question:

What should educators know about the educator expense tax deduction?

Answer:

Eligible educators can deduct up to $250 in qualified expenses that were not reimbursed.

Educators who are eligible:

  • Teachers, instructors, counselors, principals, or aids AND

  • In kindergarten through 12th grade AND

  • Work at least 900 hours in a school during a school year AND

  • Work in a school that provides elementary or secondary education.

Deductible expenses include:

  • Professional development course fees

  • Books and supplies

  • Computer equipment, software, and services

  • Other equipment and materials used in the classroom
