Question
What is a smishing campaign?
Answer
A smishing campaign is a scam that comes across as a text message on mobile phones. It appears as though the text is coming from the IRS with offers including COVID relief, tax credits, or help setting up an online account with the IRS. The goal of smishing is to steal personal and financial information.
There has been a significant increase in smishing campaigns over the last few months, and especially over the last few weeks.
To report smishing, email phishing@irs.gov.
