Q&A of the Week March 6, 2024
Question
What is a Low Income Taxing Clinic (LITC)?
Answer
According to the IRS, Low Income Taxing Clinics do the following:
Provide pro bono representation to assist low-income taxpayers in resolving tax disputes with the IRS
Educate taxpayers for whom English is a second language about their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers
Identify and advocate on issues that impact these taxpayers
Qualified organizations can apply for an LITC grant to benefit taxpayers in their community who need the assistance outlined above. Grants received can be up to $200,000 each year.
A LITC must provide services for free - or for a nominal fee at most. Priority for grants is given to established organizations that can provide services in underserved areas.
The deadline to submit a LITC grant application is April 10, 2024. The grant application and guidelines are here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p3319.pdf.
