Q&A of the Week February 7, 2024
Question
What is the CAT in Ohio?
Answer
CAT stands for Commercial Activity Tax. The CAT filing deadline for the fourth quarter of 2023 is February 12, 2024.
Please note: Beginning January 1, 2024, there are major changes to the CAT. If your gross tax receipts are less than $3 million per calendar year, you no longer have to pay the CAT - and should cancel your CAT account.
There are three ways to cancel your CAT account:
1. Log in here: https://gateway.ohio.gov/. Then select "CAT Cancel Account transaction."
2. When you file your return for 2023 (by February 12), check the cancellation checkbox.
3. Complete the Business Account Update Form here: https://tax.ohio.gov/static/webview/view1/UIExtension/1/pdf-view.html?filename=forms/registration_updates/business_account_update_form_fi.pdf
If you have additional questions about the Commercial Activity Tax, please consult a tax professional.
